The Etiquettes of Masjid – How to Behave in the House of Allah
Masjids are more than just buildings; they’re the beating heart of our communities, a place where we connect with Allah, recharge our spirituality, and meet our fellow Muslims. Whether you visit daily or just pop in for Jumu’ah, how we behave inside a masjid matters, a lot! Let’s break down the basic etiquettes in a way that anyone can follow, whether you’re new to masjid life or just want a friendly reminder.
Why Etiquettes Matter in a Masjid
Think of the masjid as Allah’s house. When we visit a friend, we show our best manners, so shouldn’t we do the same (or even better!) when visiting Allah’s house? The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The masjids are the most beloved places to Allah on the face of the earth.” (Sahih Muslim)
So, just like we wouldn’t walk into someone’s home carelessly, we treat the masjid with even more respect and love.
Detailed Etiquettes – Step by Step
Let’s walk through what to do (and not do) when stepping into the masjid, with some wisdom from the Quran and Sunnah sprinkled in.
1. Come With a Clean Heart and Body
- Make wudu (ablution) before you enter.
- Wear clean clothes and, if possible, apply a bit of perfume (for men).
The Quran says:
“O children of Adam! Take your adornment at every masjid…” (Quran 7:31)
2. Enter with the Right Foot and a Dua
- Step in with your right foot first.
- Say the masjid entrance dua (even just: “Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik” – O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy).
3. Maintain Silence and Respect
- Keep your voice low, no loud chatting, phone calls, or arguments.
- Remember, people may be praying, reading Quran, or just reflecting.
4. Greet the Masjid
- If it’s not prayer time, pray Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid, a two rak’ah prayer to greet the masjid.
5. Be Mindful of Cleanliness
- Don’t litter or leave food wrappers, tissues, etc.
- If you see something on the floor, pick it up, even if it’s not yours!
- The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Removing harm from the masjid is a charity.” (Ibn Majah)
6. Respect Personal Space
- Try not to step over people or squeeze through tight rows unless absolutely necessary.
- Leave your shoes in the proper place, not blocking walkways.
7. Switch Off or Silence Your Phone
- There’s nothing more distracting than a phone ringing during Salah!
- Put it on silent (not vibrate, if possible).
8. Engage in Ibadah, Not Idle Talk
- Read Quran, make dhikr, or just sit quietly.
- Avoid idle chit-chat about dunya (worldly matters), especially during khutbah (sermon) or when others are praying.
9. Show Kindness to Kids (and Teach Them Too!)
- If you bring children, teach them how to behave, but also be patient and gentle.
- Don’t glare at a child who makes a little noise; they’re learning!
10. Exit With Dua and Goodness
- Leave with your left foot and say the masjid exit dua (even a simple: “Allahumma inni as’aluka min fadlik”. O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty).
- Smile and greet your fellow worshippers. A small salam goes a long way!
Bonus: The Quranic Spirit
Allah tells us in the Quran:
“…And the mosques are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone.” (Quran 72:18)
This reminds us to keep our intentions pure—every action in the masjid should bring us closer to Allah.
Quick Recap
- Come clean, in body and heart.
- Enter with dua, right foot first.
- Keep it peaceful, tidy, and respectful.
- Focus on worship, not worldly distractions.
- Leave with gratitude and spread good vibes.
Final Thought:
If you ever feel unsure, just ask yourself: “Would the Prophet ﷺ do this in the masjid?” If the answer is yes, you’re on the right track!
Let’s make our masjids shine, not just with pretty lights, but with beautiful manners and warm hearts. May Allah accept our efforts and make us regular visitors to His blessed houses. Ameen!
